On November 8, 1519, Moctezuma received Hernán Cortés in Tenochtitlan. Gifts changed hands. The visitors were given quarters inside the Mexica capital. Within days, according to Cortés's own account, the host's freedom had become a bargaining tool.
Why let an armed expedition inside in the first place?
This documentary follows the problem from envoys and interpreters to Tlaxcalan alliances, the crisis inside Tenochtitlan, the expedition's expulsion in 1520, and the siege of 1521. The invitation opened a dangerous possibility. The conquest still required later decisions, Indigenous coalitions, warfare, disease, and a devastating siege.
The familiar claim that Moctezuma mistook Cortés for a returning god needs careful scrutiny. We distinguish contemporary claims, later traditions, disputed events, and modern interpretations. Moctezuma's exact private motives and the circumstances of his death remain uncertain.
