Can you actually make a 22RE fast? Or are we just polishing a very reliable, very slow stone?
I’ve spent months in the garage turning my '88 Toyota 4Runner into a supercharged experiment, and in this video, I’ve combined the entire journey into one massive "Build Movie." This is every weld, every wiring headache, and every "will it start?" moment from the Beat Up Builds 22RE Supercharger series.
We started with a simple goal: bolt a used Eaton M90 supercharger onto a legendary (but sluggish) Toyota inline-four and see what happens. What followed was a rabbit hole of fabrication and tuning that pushed this "budget" build to the limit.
What we covered in this build:
The Foundation: Fitting the M90 to the 22RE. We didn't have a kit, so we made it work with custom brackets and a lot of trial and error.
The Fueling Evolution: We started with the stock ECU and a rising rate FMU to start out budget friendly and prove all the haters wrong. You can boost on the stock ecu without killing it! we upgraded later for more control. Enter the Microsquirt Standalone EFI conversion and the custom plug-and-play harness.
Fabrication & Airflow: You'll see the full process of building the custom intake plenum, the tensioner assembly to get the supercharger mounted up.
The Payoff: Real-world street tuning, chasing the perfect AFRs, and finally hearing that M90 whine scream through the gears.
Whether you’re a Toyota purist, a fan of "Junkyard Turbo" style builds, or you're currently staring at a 22RE in your driveway wondering if it can handle boost—this video is for you. This isn't a "polished" shop build; it’s a real-world, grease-under-the-fingernails project showing what’s possible with some swap-meet parts and a bit of determination. You don't have to be rich to party.
