Two historic streets in Kyoto have survived for centuries. How did Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka keep so much of their traditional character while Japan changed around them?
In this documentary, we explore the history of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the famous stone-paved streets in Kyoto's Higashiyama district that lead toward Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
We'll look at the stories and superstitions surrounding these streets, the traditional wooden machiya townhouses that line them, and the merchants and pilgrims who once traveled through the neighborhood.
We'll also explore how Kyoto survived much of the destruction of World War II, why the Sanneizaka area received historic preservation protection in 1976, and what life looks like along these streets today.
Along the way, we'll visit Kiyomizu-dera, learn about Kyoto's traditional architecture, and discover why these streets are about much more than the photographs tourists take.
