How do Babaláwos learn and remember so many Ifá verses without reading from a book during consultation? In this fascinating continuation of our interview with Babaláwo Ifatosin Oladimeji Eweje, he explains how Ifá knowledge is traditionally learned, memorized, and passed from one person to another. He describes how he would listen to different Babaláwos chant Ifá, write down what he learned and commit the verses to memory. According to him, writing can assist the learning process, but an Awo does not simply depend on reading from written notes while chanting Ifá. He then shares an Ifá account explaining why Ọ̀rúnmìlà was given an ear rather than a pen or book, connecting this with the oral transmission of Ifá knowledge. He emphasizes the importance of listening carefully, developing memory and retaining what has been taught. One of the most striking moments comes when he addresses a question sometimes raised by people comparing Ifá with Christianity and Islam: Our own book is in our heads.” He explains that while people may point to the Bible or Qur'an and ask where the equivalent Ifá book is, traditional Ifá knowledge is preserved through learning, listening, memorization, and oral transmission. The conversation also explores how someone can combine formal education with learning Ifá. Babaláwo Ifatosin explains that children and young people can learn Ifá while attending school, just as people historically combined learning Ifá with learning a trade.
