UK COPYRIGHT LAW – SUMMARY Copyright protection in the United Kingdom is principally governed by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA). Copyright arises automatically in qualifying works, including film and video recordings; registration is not required. The copyright owner has exclusive rights over activities including copying, issuing copies to the public, showing or playing protected material in public, and communicating protected material to the public. Unauthorised use of the whole or a substantial part of a protected work may amount to copyright infringement, although statutory exceptions can apply in certain circumstances. Where infringement is established, the copyright owner may pursue civil remedies, which can include an injunction to stop the unauthorised use and a claim for damages or other financial remedies. Certain deliberate commercial infringements can also amount to criminal offences. © 2026 KIAH Entertainments. All rights reserved.
