I Lost My Heart — Civic Center, San Francisco
In my travel series I Lost My Heart, I explore a different side of San Francisco. It’s a personal reflection on the places I discover, the people I meet, and the stories that bring this extraordinary city to life. Travelling alone, I embark on a journey of self-discovery, uncovering the history, character, and hidden corners of the great city by the bay.
Of course, I visit the iconic tourist landmarks, but I also spend time in neighbourhoods less frequently explored by travellers. The series is an honest, personal, and often humorous portrait of The City, capturing its beauty, energy, eccentricities, and sheer joy of life.
In this episode, I explore San Francisco’s Civic Center, a remarkable part of the city where grand architecture, political power, and cultural life come together. Dominated by the magnificent City Hall, with its enormous dome rising above the surrounding streets, Civic Center is a neighbourhood that seems to tell the story of San Francisco itself.
But how did this extraordinary collection of public buildings come to be? What inspired the grand civic vision that transformed the area in the early twentieth century? And how did the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 help shape the city that rose from the ashes?
I explore the architectural splendour of City Hall, the imposing War Memorial Opera House, the historic Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and the surrounding cultural institutions that give this part of San Francisco its distinctive character. From Beaux-Arts grandeur to the city's more modern architectural expressions, Civic Center offers a fascinating glimpse into the ambitions of a city determined to make its mark.
Yet, as with so much of San Francisco, there is more to this neighbourhood than its impressive buildings. This is also a place of contrasts, where civic pride and cultural achievement sit alongside the everyday struggles of urban life. It is a part of the city that challenges, surprises, and rewards those willing to look beyond the obvious.
If you're interested in architecture, history, urban life, and the stories behind the places that make San Francisco unique, come along for the journey.
In I Lost My Heart, I go beyond the familiar tourist trail to discover the real character of this extraordinary city, one neighbourhood, one building, and one unexpected encounter at a time.
