She says: I have chosen. I will not choose again.

Source note. Label: scripture. This story is from the Mahabharata, Vana Parva, the Pativrata Mahatmya section, the Savitri Upakhyana, told by Markandeya to Yudhishthira, in the Ganguli translation around sections two hundred ninety-one to two hundred ninety-eight. The outline, including Ashvapati's eighteen years of penance to the goddess Savitri, the birth of Savitri to Queen Malati, her journey to choose a husband, Satyavan and his blind father Dyumatsena, Narada's prophecy, Savitri's insistence, the wedding, her taking on the hermit's dress, is taken from published summaries and has not been verified line by line against the Sanskrit. The remark that suitors were afraid to ask for her is a tradition I have not verified in the text. Savitri's words to her father are paraphrased. Where later popular tellings differ from the Mahabharata, I follow the Mahabharata outline. I am not quoting Sanskrit today.
