Seizing Divine Opportunities | Luke 18

This sunday, we looked at something very important: divine opportunities—those moments that God creates in our lives, moments that may look ordinary, but carry extraordinary possibilities. Our text is Luke 18, and when you read through this chapter, you discover a number of people who encountered significant moments with God. We see two men praying in the temple. One was a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. They were both in the same place, but they approached God differently. One came trusting in himself; the other came crying for mercy. And their responses to that divine moment produced different outcomes. Then Jesus tells us about a widow and an unjust judge. This widow had a need, but she also recognized that she had an opportunity to keep knocking. She would not give up. She seized her moment through persistence. Then we come to the rich ruler. Here was a man who had everything—wealth, status, influence and religious credentials. And yet, he came face-to-face with Jesus. What an opportunity! Jesus gave him an invitation to follow Him. But when the man discovered the cost, he went away sorrowful. And then, almost immediately, we meet another man. A blind beggar. He had no wealth. He had no position. He had no influence. He was sitting by the roadside, begging. But then he heard something: Jesus was passing by. And this man understood something very important. This was his moment! He could not see Jesus with his physical eyes, but he could recognize the opportunity with his spiritual ears. And he cried out: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” The crowd tried to silence him, but he cried out even louder. Why? Because he refused to miss his moment. And that is what I want to speak to us about today: SEIZING DIVINE OPPORTUNITIES. Because sometimes Jesus is passing by, and we don't recognize the moment. Sometimes God opens a door, but we are afraid to walk through it. Sometimes God gives us an opportunity to pray, to serve, to give, to obey, to step out in faith, to reconcile, to answer His call—but we allow the moment to pass. Look at the contrast in Luke 18. The rich man saw Jesus and went away sorrowful. The blind beggar could not see Jesus, but he recognized his opportunity—and when Jesus called him, he followed Him. One walked away from Jesus. The other walked with Jesus. One missed his moment. The other seized his moment. And I believe that God is speaking to somebody today. There are opportunities that God is creating around your life—opportunities in your family, your ministry, your work, your calling, your spiritual life. And the question is not simply, “Is God giving me an opportunity?” The question is: “Will I recognize it, and when I recognize it, will I seize it?” My prayer today is that the Holy Spirit will illuminate our spiritual eyes and sharpen our spiritual understanding, so that we will recognize the opportunities God creates for us in Christ. May we not miss our moment. May we not walk away sorrowfully. May we have the faith to cry out when Jesus is passing by. And may we seize every divine opportunity that God places before us.
