It represents equality and humility, famously rebuilt in gold and marble by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1830. The city and sacred pool (Sarovar) were started by Guru Ram Das Ji in 1577. Guru Arjan Dev Ji designed the temple at a lower level to signify humility and invited Sufi saint Mian Mir to lay the foundation stone in 1588. The temple has four entrances, symbolizing that it is open to all people, regardless of background. In the early 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, a Sikh ruler, renovated the temple, covering it with marble and gold, giving it its iconic appearance.
