How America Built Route 66 Across 2,448 Miles and Eight States In 1926, America created one of the most famous highways ever built: a road stretching roughly 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, crossing eight states and three time zones. It became Route 66. But America didn't simply carve one brand-new highway across the continent. Instead, engineers stitched together existing state highways, local roads, wagon routes, and older trails into a single numbered route connecting the Midwest with the Pacific Coast. And in the beginning, huge sections weren't even paved. Route 66 crossed Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Each state was responsible for improving its own section, which meant travelers could encounter smooth concrete in one state and rough dirt or gravel hundreds of miles farther west. Engineers gradually widened lanes, eliminated dangerous curves, built bridges, improved drainage, and created an all-weather highway capable of handling America's rapidly growing number of automobiles and trucks. By 1938, the entire route had finally been paved. The highway soon became much more than transportation. During the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, thousands of families followed Route 66 west toward California. During World War II, the corridor carried military traffic and supplies. After the war, gas stations, motels, diners, neon signs, and roadside attractions turned it into one of the defining symbols of American automobile culture.
