Funabori Station is a station on the Toei Shinjuku Subway Line located in Funabori 3-chome, Edogawa Ward, Tokyo.
It is situated roughly in the center of Edogawa Ward, and the area around the station is known for its excellent convenience, with a wide range of public facilities and commercial establishments.
Here are some of its features.
・A major station served by express trains: It is an express stop on the Toei Shinjuku Line, and taking an express train allows you to travel directly to Shinjuku Station in about 20 minutes.
Access to the city center for commuting to work or school is excellent.
・Views from the elevated station: While the Toei Shinjuku Line mostly runs underground, it crosses the Arakawa and Nakagawa Rivers via railway bridges starting from Higashi-Ojima Station, and the line east of Funabori Station runs on an elevated track. As a result, the platforms offer expansive, unobstructed views.
The landmark in front of the station, “Tower Hall Funabori”
・“Tower Hall Funabori,” located right in front of the station’s North Exit, is Funabori’s most iconic landmark.
・Free Observation Tower: The tower stands 115 meters tall (with the observation deck at 103 meters), and you can actually climb up to the observation deck for free.
It’s a hidden gem offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Disney Resort, and—on clear days—even Mount Fuji.
・Comprehensive Entertainment and Multi-Purpose Complex: The facility houses Edogawa Ward’s only movie theater (Funabori Cinepal), as well as a large hall, exhibition spaces, a wedding venue, and several restaurants.
History and the Station’s Symbol
・Pioneer of the “Bus-Rail System”: When it opened in 1983, it introduced Tokyo’s first system designed to facilitate seamless transfers between trains and buses. Even today, the station plaza features a large, covered bus terminal that shelters passengers from the rain and wind,
serving as a hub for travel north and south.
・The Station’s Symbol Is the “Goldfish”: Edogawa Ward (particularly the Funabori area) has a history of thriving goldfish farming, and in honor of this, the “goldfish” was adopted as Funabori Station’s symbol.
Upcoming Highlight: Redevelopment of the Station’s North Exit
A large-scale redevelopment project is currently underway in the area around Funabori Station’s north exit.
Targeted for completion in the early 2030s, the aging Edogawa Ward Office is scheduled to be relocated and rebuilt in front of Funabori Station.
As part of this project, two mixed-use complexes—combining offices, commercial facilities, and high-rise apartments—are set to be constructed, and the area is attracting attention as the town is poised for significant future growth.
