Every Person Who Sat on the Iron Throne Explained

Forged in the fires of Balerion the Black Dread from a thousand surrendered swords, the Iron Throne has served as the ultimate seat of power in Westeros for over three centuries. Beginning with the legendary reign of Aegon the Conqueror, the Targaryen dynasty established a royal lineage that saw periods of unprecedented peace under Jaehaerys the Conciliator and devastating ruin during the Dance of the Dragons. Throughout its bloody history, the jagged chair has claimed the lives of ruthless tyrants like Maegor the Cruel while breaking gentle rulers who were tragically ill-equipped for the brutal realities of the realm. From the devastating legacy of the Mad King to the catastrophic decisions of Aegon the Unworthy, holding the continent's most contested seat has consistently required a devastating personal cost. Following the violent collapse of Targaryen supremacy, the crown shifted through a chaotic era defined by the Baratheon and Lannister families. Unlikely figures like Jaime Lannister and Eddard Stark briefly held court in the immediate aftermath of Robert's Rebellion, paving the way for the disastrous reigns of Joffrey and Tommen Baratheon. The relentless pursuit of this melted steel prize ultimately culminated in Cersei Lannister's explosive rule and Daenerys Targaryen's tragic arrival at a ruined, ash-covered throne room. Ultimately, the historic seat of power outlasted almost everyone who fought for it before being melted to slag, leaving Bran the Broken to govern a fundamentally changed kingdom from a wheelchair.
