Starting Over at 50 | What 6 Years in Spain Have Taught Us

Six years ago today, we finally arrived. Three months of planning, five days on the run in the car, and one month’s Airbnb booked in Sotogrande. A plan, the will to make it happen, and absolutely no guarantees. It nearly didn’t happen. Over dinner in Biarritz, a waiter told us not to bother. The border was closed, he said, and we’d be turned back by the Guardia Civil. He’d never actually been to the border. We decided we had nothing to lose and went anyway. There was no border, no Guardia Civil, and we drove out of torrential rain straight into Spanish sunshine. From there it was a daily game of dodging Covid lockdowns, three stops in Spain, and finally a bottle of cava on the beach the moment we arrived. Oh, and a stray cat called Cheesecake who moved in with us for the month. Six years on, sat at our local beach cafe, we look back at what made it work. Breaking a huge, overwhelming change into stages. Adapting when plans fall apart. And only listening to people who’ve actually done what you’re trying to do, because the ones telling you not to are usually talking about their own fears, not yours. Make a plan and take the first step. Once you’ve ticked that box, the next one gets a whole lot less scary.
