China built the largest dam on Earth. 1.3 million people were displaced. 13 cities, 140 towns, and 1,300 archaeological sites went underwater.
The Three Gorges Dam generates 22,500 megawatts — the equivalent of 18 nuclear power plants running simultaneously. It has reduced catastrophic flooding on the Yangtze. And in 2007, the Yangtze river dolphin was declared functionally extinct.
This documentary breaks down how the dam was built, what the sediment problem actually means, why the resettlement program fell short of its promises, and what the Yangtze looks like downstream today.
