I took five cameras across Death Valley and Route 66 to find out — is the Leica M11P Safari still the king? Honest field results, a surprising film confession, and one clear answer. Featuring the Leica M11, Leica M6, Fujifilm GFX100RF, Hasselblad X2Dii, and a Pentax 645.

On a road trip from the Bay Area through the Eastern Sierras, Death Valley, Las Vegas, and back through Route 66, I shot with five cameras: the Leica M11P Safari, Leica M6, Hasselblad X2D Mark II with the 55V, Fuji GFX 100RF, and the Pentax 645NII. One camera per situation, one lens per camera, no safety nets. From a commercial shoot with the Ineos Grenadier at Alabama Hills to medium format film on the Death Valley dunes, every camera got a real assignment. In this video I break down the experience and output of each — what each camera got right, where each one fell short, and what three years of shooting the M11 has taught me about what I actually want from a camera. Spoiler: I also finally say something out loud about 35mm film that I've been avoiding for a while.
