In 1021, someone cut down a tree in Newfoundland. A thousand years later, scientists counted its rings and read the exact year. That tree is where the entire history of Canada begins.
In about 20 minutes, this video walks through the history of Canada, from the Norse at L’Anse aux Meadows and the fur trade, through the Plains of Abraham and Confederation, to the 1995 Quebec referendum and the Alberta referendum on October 19, 2026. If you’ve ever wondered how a country this large and this divided has held together, this is the story, told through the deals that built it and the people who weren’t always in the room.
What This Video Covers
The Viking-era date at L’Anse aux Meadows, established through tree-ring evidence
The fur trade, New France, and the Hudson’s Bay Company’s 1670 royal charter
The Acadian deportation, the Plains of Abraham, Sainte-Foy, and the Quebec Act
The War of 1812 at Detroit, the Charlottetown Conference, Confederation, and the sale of Rupert’s Land

The Chinese head tax and the Canadian Pacific Railway
