Rare combat footage from the Battle of France shows German troops forcing a crossing of the Marne at Château-Thierry in June 1940. Infantry pioneers move toward the river under machine-gun cover, smoke conceals the opposite bank, a soldier swims across carrying a line, and inflatable assault rafts are pulled over while a bridgehead is established. German advance troops reached Château-Thierry on 10 June 1940, but the bridges over the Marne had been destroyed by retreating French forces. Fighting continued around the river as German units attempted to establish crossings south of the town. By 12 June, German forces had broken across the Marne in the Château-Thierry sector. Paris was occupied two days later, on 14 June 1940. The opening sequence provides an unusually detailed visual record of a river assault. Machine guns provide covering fire while smoke screens obscure the southern bank. Infantry pioneers carry an inflatable raft toward the water. One soldier then swims across the river with a rope, allowing the first raft to be pulled toward the opposite bank. Further troops cross under covering fire as the contemporary intertitles announce the formation of a bridgehead. The film then records the immediate aftermath: destroyed buildings, wreckage, German graves beside the river and engineers constructing temporary wooden bridges across the Marne. Part of the material is in rare original color. It shows the countryside around the Marne, German sentries and military positions, as well as First World War military cemeteries around Château-Thierry and Belleau. The region had already been a major battlefield in 1918. American and French troops fought German forces around Château-Thierry, Belleau Wood and the Marne. The film includes color images of the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery at Belleau, with rows of white crosses, a Star of David marking the grave of a Jewish American serviceman, and the American flag. German World War I graves and memorials are also shown, creating a striking visual connection between the two world wars on the same landscape. Later sequences return to Château-Thierry, showing the Church of Saint-Crépin, damaged streets, civilians clearing rubble and newly constructed bridges. The cameraman then travels toward Paris, where street scenes document the German occupation of the French capital. The final part appears to have been filmed during the winter of 1940–41. German soldiers and civilians walk through snow-covered streets and parks before the footage ends with a Wehrmacht military band and soldiers performing a serenade for an officer. The archive catalogues this material in connection with the German 78th Infantry Division, later renamed the 78th Sturm Division. However, that designation was only introduced in 1943, and the precise unit affiliation of the troops seen in the combat sequence cannot be established from the surviving footage alone. This film is presented for historical and educational purposes.
