How the Enemy Uses Fear to Keep You Stuck

There's a rope tied around your leg that stopped being able to hold you a long time ago. Circus elephants get staked young, when the rope actually can hurt them. By the time they're strong enough to walk away, they don't try. The belief got installed early, and the enemy doesn't have to show up again. That's what fear does, and a lot of us are running on it without knowing it, because it's so deeply ingrained we think it's our personality, or our quirkiness, or our holiness. This episode is unscripted and it goes deep. I get into what the Bible actually says about fear, and why "do not fear" and "fear the Lord" are the same Hebrew word. Hebrew never built two vocabularies. It has one word for the human capacity to be affected by something greater than yourself, and the text tells you what to do with that capacity based entirely on what it's pointed at. We look at Exodus 20:20, where that root shows up twice in one verse with opposite instructions. The Greek deilia in 2 Timothy 1:7, which is cowardice, not reverence. The Aramaic underneath Abba. And the verse I think is the most important one in the whole study, Psalm 130:4: there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared. Fear is the response to forgiveness, not to threat. I also talk about why some of the meanest people you'll meet are Christians, and why underneath hatred and anger there is almost always fear. The diagnostic question is simple. Does it move you toward God or away from him? Adam heard God's voice and hid. That fear has to go. Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, said woe is me, and then said here I am, send me.
