Farm radios brought news, weather reports, market prices, and entertainment to American homes that had no electricity at all.
Built for rural families beyond the reach of power lines, these battery-powered radios used everything from A and B batteries to six-volt storage batteries and special low-drain vacuum tubes. Some families even charged their radio batteries with small wind generators such as the Zenith Wincharger.
During the 1930s, companies including Zenith, Philco, Crosley, and others built special farm radios for this enormous rural market. Wind chargers, farm battery packs, vibrator power supplies, and even 32-volt home electrical systems created an entire parallel world of off-grid radio technology.
But Rural Electrification changed everything. As electric cooperatives pushed power lines deeper into the American countryside, farm families replaced their battery sets with ordinary plug-in radios. The farm radio did exactly what it was designed to do — until the electricity it was built to live without finally arrived.
