April 1976. Southwest Arkansas, fifteen miles outside Hope. Amos Whitlock died in October on the seat of his tractor at the end of a cotton row. By April, the bank had brought the auction to his widow's front yard — and a land buyer from Dallas opened the bidding low enough to bury her.
More than a hundred neighbors stood in that yard and refused to raise a hand. Then a heavy-set man at the very back, in a work jacket, a feed store cap and thick glasses, outbid everyone, paid on the spot, and told the auctioneer whose name to write on the deed. It wasn't his.
The moment he spoke, every head in the yard turned. They knew that voice.
And the reason Elvis Presley was standing in a muddy Arkansas farmyard went back twenty-one years — to a pink Cadillac burning on the side of a dark highway in 1955, a farmer with a shovel and two feed sacks, and an I.O.U. a twenty-year-old singer nobody had heard of wrote on the back of a handbill.
