Kentucky's coal camps kept their own hospitals, their own doctors and their own paperwork, and the paperwork is the only reason this one survived. In October of 1931, a timber crew brought something down a Perry County mountain on a mule sled and left it at a company hospital door, still breathing: 9 feet long, hairless, with a joint too many in every finger. The company doctor wrote 3 words in the diagnosis column and went back to bed. The night nurse filled in that ward chart every 2 hours for 5 nights, and on the 6th morning the ward had been scrubbed, repainted and emptied, and Clell Varden was sent for to hold an inquest on a body that was already in the ground.
