North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell North and South follows the story of Margaret Hale who lives in a quaint little village in the South of England namely Helstone with her father Richard Hale and mother Maria Hale. After spending some years living with her aunt Aunt Shaw in London, Margaret comes home to find out that her father has given up his job in the church and they are to relocate to an industrial town called Milton in the North of England to become a private tutor. And thus begins the journey of North and South. In Milton, Margaret meets John Thornton, an cotton-mill owner whom she finds very disagreeable. Thornton is her father's pupil and Margaret finds his thoughts classist and thinks him apathetic of his workers whereas Thornton finds Margaret to be very proud yet nurtures a soft spot for her. This story explores the life of these two protagonists in the town of Milton.. North and South was published by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell in 1854 in a serialized manner. It explains the differences between the quiet, tranquil lives in the South versus the hubbub in the industrial Northern towns in England. Gaskell uses Margaret to show us differences in the lives of "masters and men". Although it took me a while to finish this book because adulting is hard!!! It is such a warm read. Gaskell entraps you in the web of words. The depiction of the uniqueness of the towns, the beauty of the characters ropes you in.
