Three hours on a rooftop, on the last warm night of the year.
The laundry is dry. It's been dry for hours. You keep finding reasons not to take it down, and one of those reasons is still hanging at the far end of the line, where you left it in July because taking it in felt like agreeing she wasn't coming back for it.
The bare bulb clipped to the line does most of the lighting up here. Everything else is the city, three floors down and a long way off.
The set is led by a warm Rhodes — soft, slightly detuned, the kind that sounds like it's been left plugged in all summer — with a cello pad underneath and the traffic hum sitting where a hi-hat would normally be. 72 BPM, no vocals, nothing to sing along to. Made to be left on.
