स्रोत: NPCI, Financial Express, Moneycontrol, Business Standard, Mint, India Today, Amar Ujala. #UPI #UPIMDR #DigitalIndia #NPCI #CashVsUPI #IndianEconomy #DoubleCheck #SanketUpadhyay #MerchantDiscountRate #October15 From 15 October 2026, person-to-merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000 carry a 0.4% merchant discount rate. At ₹75,000 and above the fee stops at ₹300. Rail, telecom, insurance and fuel pay a flat ₹5. Person-to-person transfers, bills up to ₹2,000, and small merchants taking under ₹1 lakh a month on UPI stay free. NPCI says this is not a tax, the customer is not charged, and apps cannot add a platform fee. The fee has not collected a paisa. The split already has. Financial Express, Anees Hussain, 2 October: payment aggregators are asking sponsor banks for 50–80% of the acquiring bank’s 0.12% share. On a ₹10,000 payment the MDR is ₹40, the bank’s piece is ₹12, and the aggregator wants ₹6 to ₹9.60. Moneycontrol’s reading of the NPCI split: issuer 40%, acquirer 30%, UPI app 20%, the app’s bank 10%. Goldman, Citi and Jefferies put the annual pool at about ₹15,000–20,600 crore. Cash is already at a record. Amar Ujala, 6 October: ATM withdrawals hit ₹2.24 lakh crore in August. RBI’s own 31 August print was ₹42.85 lakh crore in circulation, up 12.3% on the year. The levy has not started, and notes are already rising. This is a Double Check class. The news is attributed. Any pass-through to the shopper is analysis, not a notified customer charge.
