He is also recognized as the controversial eighth caliph of the Muslims. Sayyiduna Marwan (رضي الله عنه) was the son of Sayyiduna Hakam ibn Abi al-As, who was the uncle of Sayyiduna Uthman (رضي الله عنه). According to Al-Muhabbar by Allama Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Habib al-Baghdadi and Al-Ma'arif by Ibn Qutaybah al-Dinawari, Sayyiduna Marwan (رضي الله عنه) was married to Umm Aban bint Uthman, the daughter of Sayyiduna Uthman (رضي الله عنه). Some scholars believe that at the time of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) passing, he was five years old, while others suggest he was around eight or nine years old.
