In 1990, the shore of Lake Karachay, in Russia's southern Urals, measured around 600 roentgens per hour. Stand there for less than an hour and you would absorb a lethal dose. For decades, this small lake was the dumping ground of Mayak, the secret plant that made the plutonium for the first Soviet atomic bomb, next to a closed city that did not appear on any map.
This video follows the whole chain: the prisoners who built Mayak, City 40 and its residents, the river that villages drank from, the 1957 Kyshtym explosion that the Soviet Union called a disease, the drought that turned the lakebed into radioactive dust, and the 10,000 concrete blocks used to bury it. Plus the twist: the CIA knew, and stayed quiet.
Facts from published records on Mayak, the 1957 Kyshtym disaster and Lake Karachay. Some figures, such as the number of people exposed and the size of the contaminated area, vary between sources, and the narration gives the ranges.
