In October of 1983, a sixty-two-year-old Montana rancher named Halvard Ostrem began writing in a journal he had never meant to keep.
For sixty-six mornings, every entry started with the same line, in the same steady hand.
Saw a man walking east to west across the hay meadow at three seventeen this morning.
He tried to intercept it. He set two clocks. He walked into the pines with a rifle and came back without ever firing it. He spoke to a neighbor whose father had once warned him, in nineteen fifty-one, about that pasture. He went into the small town of Rennick to see an old man who kept his uncle's deputy files from a lifetime ago.
What he found was a folded newspaper from eighteen ninety-three, a photograph from the year before that, and three men standing in front of a barn. One of them was already dead when the picture was taken again, ninety-one years later, in his own east pasture, at three seventeen in the morning.
This is his written account. Read in full, from the journal that surfaced in two thousand seven, among his widow's papers.
Coldwater Draw Ranch is still there. The east pasture is still there. Every subsequent owner has kept the east-facing curtains drawn.

⚠️ A NOTE ON CONTENT: This story is a work of atmospheric historical fiction inspired by Montana ranch country folklore, Bull Mountains oral history, and accounts shared by listeners of the channel. Names, places, and dated documents referenced in the narration are fictional. Any resemblance to real persons living or deceased is coincidental. Intended for mature audiences who enjoy slow, restrained, psychological horror — no graphic content, no jump scares, just something walking across a pasture at three seventeen in the morning.
