11 Oregon Towns Reclaimed by the Forest

Across Oregon, entire communities were built around timber, mining and railroads - then disappeared when the industries that sustained them vanished. This documentary explores 11 Oregon towns that were abandoned, dismantled, relocated or cleared until little remained but forests, old roads, cemeteries, foundations and fragments of their former lives. From the company town of Valsetz, bulldozed and replanted after its mill closed, to Shevlin, a logging town designed to be moved by railway, these places reveal how quickly communities could disappear when their economic purpose ended. We visit the stories of Valsetz, Sterlingville, Bridal Veil, Cornucopia, Wendling, Shevlin, Quartzville, Whitney, Bates, Kinzua and Golden — eleven very different places connected by mining, timber, railways and the changing Oregon landscape. Some left buildings behind. Others left cemeteries, mill ponds, railway grades or concrete beneath the moss. In a few cases, almost nothing remains at all.
