Why is orange juice so expensive? In the 1997-98 season Florida picked 244 million boxes of oranges; the first USDA forecast for 2026-27 is 10 million. A can of frozen orange juice concentrate averaged $2.32 per 16 oz in January 2020 and hit a record $4.97 in May 2026 (U.S. BLS).
The bottleneck is inside the tree. Citrus greening (huanglongbing) is a bacterium spread by the Asian citrus psyllid, an insect about an eighth of an inch long. It blocks the tree's phloem, starves the roots and turns the fruit small, green and bitter. There is no cure, and a new tree takes three to five years to bear fruit. In 2026 the FDA even lowered the sugar standard for orange juice. Brazil, about 60% of U.S. juice, is sick too.
Would you pay to rebuild Florida's groves, or let Brazil carry the whole supply? Tell us in the comments.
