Thailand vs Korea | Highlights | AVC Men's Continental Championship 2026. Thailand produced one of the biggest surprises of the pool phase at the 2026 AVC Men’s Continental Championship, defeating South Korea in a dramatic five-set battle in Fukuoka, Japan. Thailand defeated South Korea 3–2 with set scores of 25–18, 25–16, 20–25, 22–25 and 15–12 on September 7, 2026. Thailand won 107 total points compared to South Korea’s 96. Thailand entered the match ranked approximately 52nd in the world, while South Korea were ranked around 25th, making this victory a significant upset. It was Thailand’s second consecutive win in the tournament and officially secured their place in the quarterfinals. Thailand started the match with enormous confidence. Their serving pressure, disciplined defense and fast transition play immediately caused problems for South Korea. Thailand controlled the opening set 25–18 and were even more convincing in the second, winning 25–16 to establish a commanding 2–0 lead. However, South Korea responded like an experienced continental power. They improved their reception, became more effective in attack and started applying much greater pressure at the net. Korea won the third set 25–20 before taking the fourth 25–22, completing an impressive comeback from two sets behind and forcing a deciding tie-break. Thailand refused to collapse after losing their advantage. In the fifth set, they rediscovered their intensity, remained composed during the decisive rallies and protected a narrow lead during the closing stages. Thailand eventually won the tie-break 15–12. A huge block by Anurak Phanram delivered one of the defining moments at the end of the match and helped Thailand complete the victory. The match featured two completely different phases. Thailand dominated the opening two sets through energy, serving pressure, organized defense and quick volleyball. South Korea then adjusted successfully, stabilized their game and used their physical strength at the net to extend the contest. The decisive difference was Thailand’s ability to recover mentally after Korea had erased their 2–0 advantage. The victory gave Thailand two wins from their opening two Pool C matches and five competition points. They had previously defeated Qatar 3–0, with set scores of 25–22, 25–19 and 25–14. South Korea remained second in the pool at that stage with one victory and one defeat, earning one point from the five-set loss. Thailand and South Korea competed in Pool C alongside Qatar and Chinese Taipei. Thailand’s victory guaranteed their qualification for the final eight before the completion of the pool phase. The result was also extremely valuable for Thailand’s FIVB World Ranking because of the considerable ranking difference between the two teams. Interestingly, this was not Thailand’s first five-set victory over South Korea in 2026. Thailand had also defeated Korea 3–2 in the AVC Men’s Nations Cup earlier in the year, winning 25–17, 24–26, 21–25, 25–18 and 15–7. Their second victory demonstrated Thailand’s growing ability to compete against traditionally stronger Asian national teams. Overall, this encounter was a classic five-set thriller. Thailand established a two-set advantage, South Korea produced an impressive comeback, and Thailand recovered just in time to finish the match. The combination of long defensive rallies, powerful attacks, important blocks and a tense deciding set made Thailand versus South Korea one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 AVC Men’s Continental Championship pool phase.
