Why the Lions Defense Fell to Dead Last

The Detroit Lions defense has a serious problem. Through four games, Detroit is sitting at or near the bottom of the NFL in several major defensive categories — including points allowed, yards allowed, passing yards, explosive plays, third-down defense and fourth-down defense. On this edition of Detroit Lions Stat Pack Monday, Joe Chapp breaks down the numbers behind the Lions' defensive struggles and goes back to the All-22 to explain why this looks like much more than a simple personnel problem. Why did Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers have so much success against Detroit's blitz packages? Why does pre-snap motion continue to create communication problems for the Lions? Why are linebackers ending up in coverage against dangerous receivers? And how much responsibility belongs to defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard compared to general manager Brad Holmes? We also look at the Lions' PFF grades, Detroit's offseason roster decisions, the Joey Porter trade conversation, whether an in-season defensive coordinator change is realistic, and the schematic adjustments Detroit can make before these problems derail the season.
