India’s air-pollution crisis is no longer limited to winter smog and particulate matter. Ground-level ozone—a largely invisible but harmful gas—is emerging as a serious summer and multi-season threat across Indian cities. Unlike the protective ozone layer in the stratosphere, ground-level ozone forms when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds released by vehicles, industries, power plants, fuels and waste react in sunlight. High temperatures and stagnant air can accelerate this process. A 2026 Centre for Science and Environment analysis covering 25 cities found that 15 recorded summer averages above India’s eight-hour ozone standard of 100 µg/m³. Delhi-NCR emerged as the largest regional hotspot, while Chandigarh recorded the highest average during the study period.
