I Heard My Name in the Crowd | Mama Was There | 80s Arena Pop Soul

[Verse 1] Mama drove me to the Greyhound With forty dollars in my coat Said, “Call me when you get there” Then stood waving by the road I sang in bars with eight people Worked mornings pouring coffee Sent pictures from small stages So she'd know I hadn't stopped [Pre-Chorus] Years of almost Years of not yet Then one night the room went dark [Chorus] I heard my name in the crowd Above the drums, above the lights One voice cutting through ten thousand Like it had my whole life inside I heard my name in the crowd And I knew who Before I found your face Mama, I heard you [Verse 2] Front row in that blue jacket Hands together, crying, laughing I missed a line and didn't care The band just kept it moving You shouted, “That's my girl!” And I forgot to breathe Every late shift, every bus ride Was standing there with me [Chorus] I heard my name in the crowd Above the drums, above the lights One voice cutting through ten thousand Like it had my whole life inside I heard my name in the crowd And I knew who Before I found your face Mama, I heard you [Bridge: Piano, bass, crowd ambience] You paid my rent one winter When I swore I was doing fine You never asked for anything You just said, “Give it time” The whole arena went quiet And somewhere in the dark— [Single Voice] “That’s my girl!” [Final Chorus] I heard my name in the crowd And every light came on All those years I thought I sang alone You were singing right along I heard my name in the crowd Now let the whole room hear me too Every road that brought me here Still leads me back to you [Final Vocal Lift] Mama, I heard you— I heard you! [Outro] The music faded You were still on your feet
