System of Rice Intensification Training

Learn how the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) can help small-scale rice farmers increase yields, reduce water use, and build healthier soils in a changing climate. In this training, ECHO Asia staff walk through the core SRI principles and show how farmers in Thailand and across Asia are adapting SRI to their local contexts. In this video, you will see how SRI changes the management of rice plants, soil, water, and nutrients to improve productivity and resilience. You will also learn how farmers are using simple, low-cost tools and practices to implement SRI on rainfed and irrigated lowland rice fields, and even on terraced upland rice. In this video, you will learn: Why rice is so important globally and in Asia, and the key challenges rice farmers face today (climate change, water scarcity, salinity, pests, and low prices). What the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is, where it is being used, and its four core principles: early plant establishment, reduced plant density, alternating wet and dry periods, and improved soil conditions. How to establish SRI in the field, including preparing seedbeds, selecting seed, transplanting very young seedlings, spacing single plants in a grid, and managing water with intermittent irrigation. How to manage weeds and build soil health in SRI systems using mechanical weeders, compost, rice straw, rice husks, and green manure cover crops (GMCCs). The documented benefits of SRI—such as reduced seed and water use, higher yields, improved seed quality, and lower greenhouse gas emissions—as well as common adoption challenges and how farmers in Southeast Asia are overcoming them.
