Gender Theory: 14th Century: ‘Gender’ replaced “sex” Sex: Difference between male and female Biological identity Gender: A social construct that attributes specific characteristics to a particular sex. Gender Theory Study of what is understood as masculine and/or feminine and/or queer behavior in any given context, community, society Cognitive-Developmental Theory Gender in binary terms only ie male and female Eg: children grow up to understand that they are either boy or girl Gender does not change Gender is fixed Structural - Functional theory Gender is a way to organize society Boys are trained for the job market Girls are trained to take care of their families Symbolic Interaction Theory Gender is something that a person does Clothes and behaviour are the main determinant.
