Eve's song over the death of her son Abel. Influenced by John Steinbeck's East of Eden. Genesis 4. Lyrics: I held them in my arms Two sons beneath the garden sky One brought the fruit of fields One brought the firstborn of his flock I watched them grow I taught them both to call Your name But something burned between them Something neither one could tame Cain, Cain Why has thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well Shalt thou not be accepted? And Abel went with Cain Into the field alone And Cain rose up against his brother And slew him with a stone Oh my sons Oh my sons How could one remain When the other lay beneath the ground? How does a mother bear this pain? *Chorus* Thou mayest Sin lieth at the door But thou mayest Thou mayest rule over it Thou mayest choose the good Thou mayest turn Thou mayest live Thou mayest** “Where is Abel thy brother?” “I know not Am I my brother’s keeper?” But I knew his voice I knew the silence in the house I knew the blood cried from the ground And there was no bringing Abel back “Cain, where is thy brother?” “His blood crieth unto Me from the ground.” Oh Cain You were angry But anger was not fate The darkness waited at the door But it did not have the final say *Chorus* Thou mayest Sin lieth at the door But thou mayest Thou mayest rule over it Thou mayest choose the good Thou mayest turn Thou mayest live Thou mayest** And God marked Cain That none should kill him And Cain went out East of Eden And I was left with Adam And the garden was gone And one son beneath the earth And one son wandering on Then God gave me another And I called his name Seth For God, I said, “Hath appointed me another seed Instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” But every mother knows A son does not replace a son And every garden carries The memory of what we’ve done *Chorus* Thou mayest Even east of Eden Thou mayest The door is still before you The choice is still your own Thou mayest turn Thou mayest love Thou mayest come home** Human led, A.I. assisted.
