On the night the Titanic sank, another ship lay stopped less than ten miles away. Her officers watched the rockets. She never moved.
This is the story of the SS Californian and her captain, Stanley Lord. Her only wireless operator switched off his set and went to bed at 11:35 PM, five minutes before the Titanic struck the iceberg. From her bridge, two officers counted eight white rockets. By their sworn evidence, they told their captain twice. He stayed in the chartroom.
The Carpathia was 58 miles away and came at full speed. She reached the first lifeboat at 4:10 AM. About 1,500 people were already dead.
The British inquiry sat for 36 days and asked more than 25,000 questions. Its finding on the Californian was one sentence: "she might have saved many if not all of the lives that were lost."
