Learn how to needle felt this characterful pumpkin gnome from start to finish. This easy autumn or fall needle felting project combines a simple felted pumpkin with a firm gnome hat, pointy ears, a nose, beard and little curled feet.
In this 34-minute tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a smooth, perfectly shaped gnome hat using a wooden BBQ skewer, without wire. You’ll also learn how to add a neat hat brim, attach the hat without spoiling its shape, make matching ears and feet, add a simple yarn beard and finish your gnome with a tiny needle felted acorn.
The project is made from several simple elements, so you can change the colours, beard and finishing details to create your own autumn display, handmade gifts or craft fair collection.

TOOLS & MATERIALS USED
• A finished needle felted pumpkin
• Carded wool or wool tops for the hat, nose, ears and feet
• A small amount of contrasting wool for the hat, optional
• Wool or other yarn for the beard
• A needle felted acorn, optional
• Wooden BBQ skewer
• 38 star felting needle
• 40 triangle felting needle, optional for a smoother finish
• Multi-needle or punch tool, optional
• Felting mat
• Folded cardboard or finger guards
You don’t need wire or sewing for this project. The wooden BBQ skewer supports the wool while you create the hat, then slides out once the shape is firm enough to hold by itself.
If you’re new to needle felting, don’t worry about having every tool I use. One good felting needle, a mat, a wooden skewer and some wool are enough to get started.
These pumpkin gnomes are decorations rather than toys and aren’t intended for children to play with.
