Aditya Kothari is 48 and has spent around 25 years working, largely in the retail industry. In 2019, he started working towards a very specific financial independence goal: use 120 months of working and saving to build enough money to fund 360 months of future expenses.
In this episode of Pension Pe Charcha, Neil Borate speaks with Aditya about how he built this retirement strategy, the investing mistakes that shaped it, and how he moved from saving primarily for tax benefits to investing around specific financial goals.
Aditya started investing through traditional insurance and later experimented with ULIPs, ELSS and other products. He opened his NPS account in 2013, initially largely for its tax benefits, before moving to corporate NPS in 2016. Over time, NPS became a larger part of his retirement plan.
The conversation goes beyond NPS. Aditya explains how he arrived at a retirement corpus of around ₹3 crore, how selling a second property accelerated his financial independence plan, why he thinks differently about FIRE, and how he separately planned for his son's education.
