If you are new to your recovery process and not sure where to start, shifting your relationship with sleep at bedtime is a crucial first step. When going through an insomnia struggle, trying very hard to sleep or attempting to force and control it only increases fear, stress, and anxiety. By moving away from forcing sleep to happen and moving towards the intention of resting, you begin to release control over sleep allowing your system to begin learning safety.
A powerful practical tool in this process is timelessness, which means choosing a time in the night to stop looking at clocks until morning. This practice helps remove rigid sleep windows and tracking, teaching your brain that the exact number of hours or wakeups is no longer important. Over time, letting go of tracking the hours of sleep helps take sleep off a high pedestal so your mind stops staying extremely focused and scared of what the night could bring.
Additionally, learning to get to know your insomnia pattern without judgment brings awareness to sleep efforts, avoidance behaviors, and reassurance seeking. Talking about the experience a little bit less during the daytime helps shift your focus toward living your life (in whatever capacity feels manageable). Finally, when you find yourself in a habit loop of feeling overwhelmed, stepping away from exposure work to reach for comforting self-care can have a really big impact on your long-term insomnia recovery.
Shift Your Intention: Stop trying very hard to force sleep to happen and instead go to bed with the intention of resting.
Practice Timelessness: Stop looking at clocks an hour or two before bed to break the pressure-cooker relationship with time. Alongside this, let go of tracking time: Cease writing down hours or wearing trackers to take sleep off a high pedestal.
Get to Know Your Pattern: Become aware of the thoughts, stories/beliefs, and avoidance behaviors fueling your insomnia struggle.
Talk About It Less: Reduce how much you discuss the night and symptoms to shift your daytime focus back to living your life.
Work With Overwhelm Differently: Reach for three comforting self-care items or distractions rather than forcing acceptance work when overwhelmed.
