1 Hour of How Every Norse Hero Died Number one hundred. Starkad the Old. He was the archetypal Norse warrior-hero, said to have lived three full human lifetimes and served under multiple Scandinavian kings. Gifted by Odin with extraordinary martial ability, Starkad fought in dozens of legendary battles and became the embodiment of the old heroic warrior code, celebrated in Saxo Grammaticus's Gesta Danorum and multiple Norse sagas. Having grown ancient and blind, Starkad actively sought his own death in combat, because dying in bed was considered deeply shameful for a warrior of his standing. He provoked the young warrior Hather into cutting off his head, reportedly catching his own severed head as it fell — a final, defiant act against an ignoble end.
