4 Financial Accounts I Set Up for My Daughter — And Why I Did Them in This Order
When my daughter was born, I wanted to do something that would hopefully give her a financial head start—but I didn't open everything at once.
Over the years, I set up four different financial accounts for her, and I intentionally did them in the order that made the most sense to me.
Here's the order:
#1: 529 Account
I opened this when she was born to start building a foundation for her future education.
#2: Checking Account
As she got older, I wanted her to start learning how money actually works—earning it, saving it, spending it and managing it.
#3: Roth IRA
Once she had earned income, I wanted to take advantage of one of the most powerful long-term wealth-building tools available.
#4: UTMA Brokerage Account
I wanted another investment account where money could be invested in ETFs and mutual funds while she was still a minor.
But this video isn't about telling you that you have to open these four accounts for your kids.
It's about showing you what I did, why I did it, and how I think about building a financial foundation for my daughters.
I'll also explain why I didn't open all four accounts at the same time and what each account is designed to accomplish.
As a dad, one of my goals is to give my daughters more than just money. I want them to grow up understanding how money works, how to invest, and how to build wealth for themselves.
That's what Girl Dad Finance is all about.
Build wealth. Teach your kids. Give them a head start.
