It's near midnight in Lansing, Michigan. A DoorDash driver drops off an alcohol order, and the woman who answers the door tells him she can't leave the house, and that her "baby daddy" made a threat. He calls 911. Two officers arrive for a welfare check. One is a training officer, and one is the officer she's training. As they pull up, a woman walks out of the house and over to the neighbor's. Nobody follows her. Instead, they spot a man walking toward his truck. They tell him to stop, and they handcuff him. Then he tells them he has a gun in his waistband.
At the preliminary exam, on cross, the training officer agrees she never saw a gun and never saw him break a law before she and her partner grabbed him. She didn't even stop to ask the woman who walked out whether she was the one they were sent to check on.
In circuit court, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina just isn't buying it.
