Thumburu Theertham is a sacred watercourse nestled in the dense forests of the Seshachalam Hills, about 12 km from the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple and 7 km from Papavinasanam in Andhra Pradesh, India. Accessible only by a challenging trek through rocky terrain and valleys, it’s open to the public just one day a year, typically during Phalguna or Chaitra Poornima (March-April full moon). The site features small waterfalls and natural pools carved by millions of years of erosion, offering stunning views of the surrounding wilderness. A small idol of Lord Thumburu is carved into a mountainside near the falls. Legend ties the theertham to Tumburu, a Gandharva (celestial musician). It’s said he cursed his lazy wife to become a toad, forced to live in the pond until Sage Agastya arrived and spoke of its sanctity, restoring her form. Devotees believe bathing here washes away sins and brings good fortune. The trek, about 8-12 km one way, is strenuous, with no facilities for food, water, or emergencies, so visitors must come prepared. It’s not recommended for the elderly, pregnant women, or those unfit for hiking. The area is also home to wildlife like spotted deer and gray langurs, and the mythical “Bangaru Balli” (golden lizard) is said to reside here, though rarely seen. #thirumala #thirupathi #travel
