Rota — Chapter III of Polonia.
In 1908 Poland did not exist on the map. A poet wrote a vow for a people forbidden to speak their own language, and two years later thousands sang it in Kraków.

HISTORICAL NOTE
Rota ("The Oath") is a poem by Maria Konopnicka written in 1908, in protest against the forced Germanisation of Poles in the Prussian partition, where children were punished for praying in Polish. Feliks Nowowiejski set it to music, and it was first sung in Kraków in 1910 at the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald. For decades it was considered a candidate for the national anthem. Meaning of the text: we will not abandon the land of our ancestors or let our language be buried; we will defend our spirit to the last drop of blood and raise our heads proudly in Poland's name. So help us God.

LYRICS
New lyrics inspired by "Rota" (Maria Konopnicka, 1908), in Polish and English.
Tu każdy kamień zna nasz głos,
Tu każda miedza pamięta,
Choć zabraniano nam słów i łez,
Mowa została święta.
Choćby nam wzięli wszystko, co mamy...
Nie rzucim ziemi!
Tak nam dopomóż Bóg!
They took the language from the school
They took the prayer from our mouth
But every mother sang it low
And every child still knows it now
Every doorway is a fortress...
Nie rzucim ziemi!
Tak nam dopomóż Bóg!
We will not leave this land
Where our grandfathers lie
Nie rzucim ziemi!
We will not leave this land!
Nie rzucim ziemi!
Tak nam dopomóż Bóg!
(Tak nam dopomóż Bóg...)
