On October 18, 1958, visitors at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island lined up to play a tennis game on a 5-inch oscilloscope screen. Physicist William Higinbotham built Tennis for Two to "liven up the place." He never patented it, and he never made a dime from it. Sixty-eight years later, on November 19, 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI launches.
Welcome to The Day It Changed. We go from a government lab to Spacewar! at MIT, from Ralph Baer's Brown Box and the Magnavox Odyssey to Pong in a California bar, then the Atari 2600, Intellivision and ColecoVision. After that come the 1983 crash and the E.T. cartridges buried in the New Mexico desert, which were dug up in 2014. Then the NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy and Super Nintendo, the 1993 Senate hearings that created the ESRB, the PlayStation, N64 and Xbox, and finally Grand Theft Auto, Hot Coffee and GTA VI.
