Dan Somers has lived in Front of Yonge for 15 to 16 years. He says Mallorytown and Front of Yonge have a history of acclaiming councillors and mayors, no vote required, and this year looked headed the same way again with only 4 names in the running. That changed, and Dan decided to be one of the people who changed it. He's running for Councillor on October 26 because he thinks residents deserve an actual choice.
Dan got his start in the community through baseball, playing in a co-ed softball league at the Diamonds in Mallorytown every Sunday. For the last 4 years he's served with the Front of Yonge Fire Department, and for 2 of those years he's been treasurer of the Fire Fighers Association. He grew up in Kingston, went to LaSalle High School, and has spent almost 14 years working in insurance and risk management.
His biggest goal for the next 4 years is getting the local ball park back to full use. He says a lot of money goes out the door every summer while the baseball community wants to come back and play, held back by barriers he's heard are mostly about the cost to rent the fields. He wants to cut those barriers down and turn the park back into a community builder that boosts the local economy. He'd also like to see council meetings pick back up (he says attendance has dried up) and more collaboration between residents and council on big decisions, including an upcoming one about a municipal building.
He describes a councillor's role as the voice of citizens, a middle point between residents and township staff. When people disagree, his approach is to hear both sides, gather all the available information, and look for common ground before a vote gets made, even knowing the outcome will not please everyone.
Dan brings a risk-management lens to his campaign. He says he's not looking to make changes for the sake of making changes; he wants to weigh the possibilities of failure and opportunity and learn from past decisions before backing a new one.
In this conversation with Jeanette, Dan talks about:
Why Front of Yonge's history of acclaiming councillors and mayors pushed him to run
His plan for getting the local ball park back to full use
Wanting more collaboration between council and residents, and more people at council meetings
How he'd handle a decision when residents disagree with each other, or with him
The risk-management lens he wants to bring to council
