Have you ever seen a puja where the idols are not made of clay—but are alive? In the heart of the Dooars, at Gorumara National Park, a unique Vishwakarma Puja tradition takes place every year. Here, the Forest Department’s trained “Kunki” elephants are worshipped as the mount of Lord Vishwakarma. On Vishwakarma Puja, the elephants are given a special day. They are bathed in the river, decorated with traditional chalk designs, flowers and garlands, and then brought for the puja. Priests perform the rituals, while forest staff, mahouts, local residents and tourists take part in this special celebration. In 2026, 32 Kunki elephants from five camps of Gorumara were part of the celebration. After the puja, the elephants were offered fruits such as bananas, coconuts, sugarcane and apples. I was fortunate to be there and take part in this extraordinary celebration. In this video, I have captured the atmosphere, the rituals and my personal experience of witnessing the worship of living elephants in Gorumara. This is not just a festival—it is a unique tradition connecting the forests, people and elephants of the Dooars. Watch till the end and experience Gorumara’s Elephant Puja with me. #GorumaraNationalPark #Dooars #ElephantPuja #VishwakarmaPuja #KunkiElephant #ElephantWorship #Gorumara #NorthBengal #DooarsTourism #WestBengalTourism
