Inside a Kyoto Textile House With Over 270 Years of History

We follow Konkan Shoten, a kinran textile manufacturer and wholesaler in Kyoto with more than 270 years of history. From selecting colors from around 1,200 samples to working closely with dyers and weavers, this documentary follows the process behind traditional Japanese kinran textiles — bringing together color, thread, pattern, and generations of craftsmanship. Behind every piece of fabric is knowledge built over centuries. Craftspeople communicate, adjust colors and materials, study textiles from the past, and use what they have inherited to create something new. Through the work of Konkan Shoten, we explore the people, skills, and relationships keeping Kyoto’s textile culture alive.
