Two spacecraft left Earth in 1977. They were built to last five years. Almost fifty years on they are still flying, still answering, still holding their dish steady on us. And right now we are switching them off ourselves, one instrument at a time, in an order somebody wrote down years ago.
This is why. Three generators produced 470 watts on launch day — less than a hair dryer. About half of that is left, and four more watts go every year. Seven of the ten instruments on each spacecraft are already dark, and almost none of them failed. We look at hydrazine that freezes just above the freezing point of water, at a thermal model rebuilt from paper drawings thirty-seven years into the flight, at a single stuck bit in an onboard computer, and at the five months when Voyager 1 answered with a repeating pattern that carried no meaning at all. And at three antennas on Earth that are no longer enough to go around.
At the end: what outlives the last signal — three hundred years to the Oort cloud, forty thousand to the nearest star, and a gold record built to outlast us.
